Residency interview answer guide
Are you prepared for the rigors of residency? Interview answer guide
The AAMC lists this question among those applicants commonly hear. Programs know residency is demanding. They want to hear that you understand what is ahead, have handled demanding work before and will ask for help when you need it.

How to approach it
- 1
Answer directly
Start with a clear yes or a confident, honest answer. Then support it with evidence instead of repeating that you are hardworking.
- 2
Give concrete evidence
Describe demanding stretches such as a heavy clerkship, a difficult month or balancing responsibilities. Say what you did to keep going and keep patients safe.
- 3
Include support and limits
Mention how you use teammates, mentors and your own routines. The ACGME lists well-being resources for residents, so referring to support is a sign of maturity, not weakness.
A fill-in outline, not a script
Yes. I know residency is demanding, and I have seen a version of that during [clerkship or experience], when [challenge]. What helped me was [habits and support]. I also know to ask for help early, and I would want to train in a program that [support you value].
This is an illustrative outline. Replace every bracket with something true from your own experience. The AAMC advises applicants to prepare rather than rehearse, so you can answer the question you are actually asked.
What advisers and program directors say
The ACGME maintains well-being tools and resources for residents, programs and institutions, and notes that individual resources cannot replace a program's commitment. It is fair to mention how you use support and ask what each program offers.
Dr. DeWaters told the AMA to avoid being defensive, own what happened and show growth with specific steps, which is also a good approach to a question about handling difficulty.
Mistakes to avoid
- Saying you are not worried at all.
- Making it sound like you plan to push through alone.
- Using only sleep or hours as the measure of rigour.
- Dismissing the question as obvious.
Check your answer
- Is there an example of demanding work?
- Does the answer include how you manage it?
- Does it mention asking for support?
Follow-up questions to expect
- Tell me about your hardest rotation.
- What do you do when you feel overwhelmed?
- What would you want from us in that case?
Common questions
Should I admit I am nervous?
A calm, honest statement that you expect challenges is fine. Pair it with how you prepare.
What if I have had a difficult time in school?
Be honest and show what has changed. The AMA's guidance on missteps is to take ownership and show growth.
Is it okay to ask the program about support?
Yes. The ACGME says individual resources do not replace a program's own commitment, so asking each program about well-being is fair.
