Realistic residency interview practice

Residency mock interviews. Practice with a plan.

A residency mock interview is a practice conversation about your application, clinical experience and reasons for choosing a program. Use feedback to make your answers clearer, then practice again in your own words.

Before your mock interview

Bring examples, not a script

Use the program's instructions to guide your practice. Its format, question types and timing may differ from another program's.

  1. Check the format. Confirm whether the interview is live or asynchronous, virtual or in person, and how many interviewers you will meet.
  2. Choose true examples. Prepare experiences about teamwork, a challenge and something you learned. Be clear about your own role and protect patient privacy.
  3. Answer aloud. Ask a peer, advisor or mentor to hear your answers. Request feedback on clarity, specificity and whether you answered the question.
  4. Review, then repeat. Make a note of what to change and try the answer again. For virtual interviews, also test your camera, sound and platform.

Practice guidance based on AAMC's preparing for your interview(s). Reviewed September 2026. Paid coaching is one option; AAMC also recommends mock practice with advisors, mentors or peers.

Why mock interviews

Practice your answers with purpose

Use a mock session to practice your answers before the real interview.

Make your answers clear

A mock interview lets you hear your answers aloud, spot where they run long and make them more specific.

Explain setbacks clearly

If you have a gap or setback, practice a direct explanation of what happened and what changed.

Get comfortable with practice

Rehearsing in a mock setting helps you notice nerves and try different ways to answer.

Learn from feedback

Use specific feedback to revise your answers before the next session.

Virtual interviews require different skills

Virtual interviewing isn't the same as in-person. You need to master camera presence, lighting, background setup, eye contact through a webcam, and managing technical issues. Confirm the format with each program and practice on the platform it asks you to use.

Explain your specialty interests

Use specific experiences to explain why the specialty fits your goals. Practice discussing what you want to learn and the training environment you are looking for.

Our process

How our mock interview process works

A four-step process for practice, feedback and improvement.

  • 1

    Application review & strategy

Before your first mock interview, we review your ERAS application, personal statement, CV, and identify potential red flags or weak areas. We develop a customized preparation strategy based on your specialty, background, and interview timeline.

  • 2

    Realistic mock simulation

Practice questions about your application, specialty interests and goals in a mock interview setting.

  • 3

    Detailed performance feedback

After the interview, we spend 15–20 minutes reviewing your performance in detail. You'll learn what worked, what didn't, and exactly how to improve. We provide a written evaluation with action items, answer frameworks, and practice exercises.

  • 4

    Iterative improvement

Between sessions, you practice implementing feedback. Each subsequent mock interview builds on previous sessions, gradually addressing weaknesses until you achieve mastery. Use each session to work on a clear next step; practice does not guarantee a particular interview or match outcome.

After each session you receive
  • Detailed written evaluation (2–3 pages)
  • Recording of your mock interview (Professional & Elite)
  • Customized answer frameworks for common questions
  • Body language and communication improvement tips
  • Practice exercises to implement before next session
  • Specialty-specific insights and advice
  • Email support for questions between sessions
