Residency program fit guide
Questions to Ask at a Residency Interview: A Fit Checklist
The interview is your chance to learn how the program works, not only to make a good impression. Bring a short set of questions that help you judge your own fit.
Start with what you need to decide
The AAMC resident-created question guide covers education, research, clinical duties, supervision, feedback, program performance and life outside work. You do not need to ask every question. Select the topics that would change how you rank a program and check its published information first.
Match the question to the person
- 1
Residents
Ask what a typical week feels like, how feedback reaches residents, and what has changed in response to their suggestions.
- 2
Faculty or leadership
Ask how clinical autonomy grows, how supervision works, and what support exists when a trainee needs help.
- 3
Yourself
Afterward, record specific examples, unanswered questions and how the program fits your training and personal priorities.
Turn a broad question into a useful one
Instead of “Is the teaching good?”, try: “I read about [verified curriculum feature]. How do residents use it during a busy clinical week, and how is its effect assessed?”
A specific follow-up invites a concrete answer. Do not pretend to know a feature you have not verified.
Listen for examples, not only promises
If a response is general, ask how it works in practice. Note who answered and whether residents and leadership describe the same experience. A conversation cannot prove every program claim, but it can show what you should investigate next.
Common questions
Should I ask questions answered on the website?
Read the program’s site first. Ask how a listed feature works day to day rather than requesting a fact already published.
Can I ask about support and work-life needs?
Yes. The AAMC guide includes questions about call, back-up coverage, resident support and personal well-being. Ask what matters for your decision.
What should I write down afterward?
Keep a short private comparison: concrete examples, open questions, how the program met your priorities and any follow-up you need.
