Interview preparation guide
Handling a challenging or stress question: residency interview preparation guide
Some interviewers deliberately ask difficult questions. AAMC says that does not give an interviewer the right to ask inappropriate questions, so preparation includes separating challenge from inappropriateness.
How to prepare
- 1
Notice the type of challenge
A hard question may test reasoning, composure or how you respond when you disagree. AAMC says some interviewers use pressure to see how you function. A question about a protected personal topic is different and should be handled using the inappropriate-question guidance.
- 2
Pause and answer the actual question
AAMC advises preparing instead of rehearsing so you do not pivot to a memorized answer. Take a moment, ask for clarification if needed, and answer the part you understand. Use a real example where an experience is requested.
- 3
Practice calm structure
Use the STAR structure for behavioral prompts: situation or task, actions, outcome and what you learned. For a hypothetical, explain what you would do, why and the expected result. Practise with a peer who is allowed to interrupt politely.
A practical exercise
Question: [..]. What is being tested: [reasoning, ownership, communication or fit]. Clarification I could ask: [..]. Honest answer in two sentences: [..].
This is an editorial exercise to adapt to your own interview, not a script or a program requirement.
What the source guidance supports
AAMC distinguishes pressure questions from inappropriate questions and recommends preparation without rigid rehearsal.
The exercises and checklists are editorial applications of the cited guidance, not legal advice, required program procedures or predictions of interview outcomes. NRMP statements were checked against the 2027 Match Participation Agreement for applicants and the Match Code of Conduct for Applicants, which the NRMP applicant code page (updated November 21, 2024) links as its current document. They are separate documents. Follow your actual invitation, school guidance and the current NRMP documents.
Mistakes to avoid
- Memorizing a pivot.
- Treating every uncomfortable question as inappropriate.
- Becoming defensive.
Check your preparation
- Is the question hard or inappropriate?
- Did I answer what was asked?
- Is my example accurate?
Questions for your practice review
- What would you do differently?
- What did you learn?
- Why did you choose that action?
Common questions
Is a hard question always a problem?
No. AAMC says some interviewers purposely challenge applicants, but that does not allow inappropriate questions.
Should I memorize a perfect answer?
AAMC advises preparing, not rehearsing, because memorized pivots can stop you answering the question asked.
